Many of us enjoy traveling to places where we can shop, visit, or just have fun at. Beverly Hills, Malibu, and Westwood are just a few local beautiful places we might visit in occasions. When you compare it to our local communities, do you notice the major difference? The resources, green places, people, and air is dramatically different and better taken care of. What our local communities such as the South and Southeast Los Angeles area face is called environmental injustice and racism.

Our communities are filled with toxic polluters that harm our environment and the air we breathe. Our communities are targeted to place toxic polluters in our area because it is believe people of color have no power or knowledge to advocate for their rights. Toxic explosions and high levels of air contaminants have been reported by the media, covering the effects our people struggle and go through, yet toxic polluters aren't being held accountable for their actions.

A brownfield is defined as a previously developed land that is currently not in use, whether contaminated or not. Based on the area we live in most of the brownfields are contaminated with high level of toxins that affect our health. Our communities are filled with way too many brownfields! Many of us could be living next to one and it can possibly be killing us each and every day, yet we aren't aware of it. Brown fields shouldn't just be properly cleaned up, but rebuilt into greener areas for our communities to enjoy.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mission is to enforce activities to ensure environmental protection. Clearly, the organization isn't enforcing and holding the toxic polluters accountable for their behavior in our area.

Our race shouldn't be a factor in deciding where toxic polluters get to reside in. Beverly Hills or Malibu don't have to experience the injustice low income minority groups have to go through. Environmental injustice and racism is real and can only be eliminated by fighting for our voices to be heard. As a community we must continue to organize and continue to resist from allowing toxic polluters to continue polluting the air we breathe, but we must also hold the EPA accountable for not enforcing their laws.

This petition is to not only hold toxic polluters and EPA accountable to protect the environment, but to show how people of color deserve environmental justice in their communities.  As minorities we stand together to fight for what's right. Our stories and struggles are told through action and movement, starting with this petition.
