Hunter Mabie started this petition to United States Department of the Treasury and

I petition for The United States of America to commit $1,000,000 in order to build schools to rehabilitate and protect children from recruitment into child soldier units in the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC). DRC is a vast country with immense economic resources, but years of conflict have led to most people living in poverty, and there is little infrastructure. There is no precise data on how many child soldiers there are in DRC but UNICEF estimates there are between 5,000 and 10,000 in just the Kasaï region alone. Children are missing out on school as violence and attacks against civilian populations continue in the Greater Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Some children are forced into being a soldier but others volunteer.  We need to stop children from wanting and/or needing to volunteer their services because they are starving, unemployable, and have nowhere else to go. These children volunteer because they don’t have food or the basic necessities. They don’t have any skills to secure employment now or in the future. There are over 1 million people in this area that have been displaced and ended up in refugee camps. The education available in the refugee camps is very limited and even non-existent. Children without an education are less likely to become employable. No job means no money. his forces children to make a choice. Join the government armed forces or other armed groups to survive or die of starvation.

One way we can help prevent children from wanting or needing to be a child soldier is to help them change their or their family’s financial situation. We can provide educational facilities in these areas to make sure these children have the skills and education needed to be employable. Since the start of violence in August 2016, 639 primary and secondary schools have been damaged by attacks and many unaffected schools are now being used as emergency accommodation for families displaced by the violence.

A primary school with three fully equipped classrooms, an office and a latrine is currently around $31,000 and a secondary school with the same facilities is approximately $43,000. $1,000,000 would be enough to build over 6 primary schools and 6 secondary schools. This amount of money would not affect the U.S. budget at all but it would make a huge difference in the lives of the people in the DRC.
