Jeff Rubin started this petition to National Governors Association and

Ageism is the number one form of discrimination facing older adults today. A global issue, more rampant than racism and sexism, this baseless and demeaning practice is so ingrained in our society that it is considered an acceptable cultural norm.

Today, there are 55 million Americans 65 and older and one billion people 60 and over worldwide. Our growing aging population and an increased life expectancy is impacting all sectors of our society. The issues associated with aging are already being felt in health, housing, employment, transportation, social welfare and social engagement. Aging dramatically affects economic and financial well-being as well.

Denial of the consequences, as well as opportunities associated with advancing age have led to insufficient and inadequate government and institutional planning. This denial continues to take a physical, financial, and emotional toll on the part of individuals, families, and communities, around the country and the world.

Without a call to action now and a formal guarantee of elder rights in the future, I fear that the prevailing point of view of aging will not change for my generation and all those who follow.

How we view aging should not be someone else’s concern. It’s everyone’s concern.

The time for acknowledgement, planning, and action is now.

Thanks for signing.
