United States Department of Health and Human Services has some jewelry guidelines regarding food services in the US. I practice the religion Sikhism, so I wear the bracelet (Kada), which is part of the 5 k’s. I have worn this bracelet since a baby (changing it out every few years because obviously people grow) and it is the one thing that makes me feel connected to Sikhism. Since now I work at Starbucks, a new dress code regulation came up regarding bracelets. I came out to my manager to tell her how I cannot and will not take off this bracelet based on my religious beliefs. She could not do much about this situation so she told me to call out to headquarters to see how I can accommodate. After having talks and back to back emails, the only accommodation they can give me is wearing long sleeve shirts. I am obviously frustrated and mad because it is summer and I am already hot as is wearing a regular t-shirt. Additionally, I asked if I could wrap it, denied. The reasoning of why I can’t wear it is for the bacteria buildup on the bracelet (do they think I don’t clean it?). This petition is to raise Starbucks and United States Department of Health and Human Services’ attention to have partners wear their religious articles of jewelry.
