It’s been approximately 10 hours(as I’m writing this) since the Corona Virus has been declared an International Pandemic. The U.S has banned all travel to and from Europe, The number of cases in the Bay Area has increased by 50 in the past week, and the NBA has even suspended the rest of the season. So the question for me is, why have schools in the Bay Area not been shut down. As you may know, the Bay Area is one of the biggest hubs for the corona virus in the U.S. While the County has banned other events such as sporting events, concerts, etc., one of the biggest areas of germ spreading, has not been addressed whatsoever. Why not? Because, according to doctors, “children have been shown to be at low risk for Corona Virus.” That is the reasoning as to why they’re not shutting down schools. Well, students can act as transporters for the virus towards our parents, who are at a much higher risk than us. If we shut down schools, we can at least block the virus from being able to be transported by us. Another possibility is online school, which has barely been considered by a lot of schools within the Bay Area. Through this method, students would at least be able to receive education while not putting themselves at risk. But, I believe the first step to solving this problem is to shut down schools in the Bay Area, especially to prevent transmission between students, parents, and teachers. Sign the petition to help your child or yourself not be at risk for the virus.
