LIPEDEMA is a progressive medical condition that affects nearly the 11% of the female population worldwide (but it is not uncommon in the male one too) and it is characterised by the enlargement of adipose tissue in the limbs due to excess fat deposits beneath the skin. Symptoms typically involve abnormal deposits of body fat, easy bruising, pain in all affected areas and, at the most severe stage, limited mobility.

The only effective treatments include, at early stages, compression garments, bandaging and manual lymphatic drainage. However, all these treatments may not have successful results and, in that case, the only recommended treatment is a specialised suction lipectomy.

Upon further research, I found out that, despite the debilitating nature of this condition, many Lipedema patients are unable to access therapeutic treatments due to the extremely expensive costs. In addition to that, insurance companies also deny coverage after wrongfully labelled Lipedema treatments as “cosmetic”.
