Imagine your whole world as you know it changing at a very young age, one day you are "normal" the next you now have a disease that requires lifesaving medicine everyday for the rest of your life.  Now imagine being left to cope with such a diagnosis on your own.... For 2 years i have sought mental health services for my daughter who has Type 1 diabetes. Multiple physicians have recommended a higher level of care such as residential treatment as her mental health has continued to decline since the onset of her diagnosis at age 10. After multiple hospitalizations,  suicide attempts,  and increasingly worsening depression over years worth of time.  Only to be met with exclusionary clauses or flat out denials due to her having a major medical condition on top of mental health needs.  Most facilities throughout the US view diabetes as a liability because insulin is considered a "high risk,  high alert" medication which requires validation by 2 RNs to administer.  Yet facilities are not required to meet the minimum guidelines so these patients can receive treatment. There are MILLIONS of diabetics in the US.  Instead of allowing them to receive the same services any "normal" human can receive they discriminate against these youths through their exclusionary clauses. DHHS and all mental health facilities needs to change their staffing guidelines to meet the needs of ALL people, they should not be allowed to put exclusionary clauses on ANY person with or without diseases.  Those with major medical conditions need these services just as much if not more than normal people do.... Help me make a change,  no child should be left behind!
