Peer and family support positions require skills that can only be gained from lived experience. Most of this growing workforce has to survive on wages that are not sustainable. Less than optimal vehicles are often used for outreaching clients in the community; living situations vary from renting rooms to living with family to moving frequently in and out of temporary situations (air b&b, hotel rooms, couch surfing). Wages for these positions exclude individials from affordable housing and rental assistance programs, yet after taxes is too low to maintain a lifestyle in which they can thrive.

We are survivors. We have helped some people who had no chance without us; we have educated families who had specifc goals learn more effective ways to meet those goals. We save lives. We bring hope to the despondent. We deescalate crisis situations. Our work requires constant vigilance, cultural competency, and emotional intelligence. We also have skills in documenting our services , networking with community services such as hospitals, detention facilities, clinics, and more. We cannot stay in these positions and build a sustainable future. Those with 3 or more years of experience usually have to move on from the peer and family support field to seek more compensation. Organizations have to bring new people in who will have to be trained.

Please sign this petion to give ample pay increases to experienced peer and family support staff. They may help someone you love someday.
