Improve Access to Quality Mental Health Services in Schools
Improve Access to Quality Mental Health Services in Schools
Since the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic, discussions surrounding mental health and how to address mental health issues brought on by isolation and decreased engagement have risen to the surface and become more recognized by the general population. Access to quality mental health services and treatment of conditions associated with mental health have become dire concerns since the pandemic, however, have not been as widely acknowledged until now. With the recent increase in mental health concerns, development of mental health conditions, and recognition of the need for appropriate mental health services, now is the time to make reform through legislation, particularly in schools.
Bill 2877 is titled the Behavioral Intervention Guidelines Act of 2021. This policy advocates for the development and use of behavioral intervention teams made up of healthcare professionals (psychologist, social work, occupational therapy, behavioral specialist, etc.) in schools to address concerning behaviors in students, as well as to provide them with adequate mental heath resources and individualized care. School can be a source of stress for students of all ages, on top of other personal factors. For this reason, schools need to be equipped to address the mental health concerns of students. The overreaching goal of this policy is to take a preventative approach toward addressing mental health issues as opposed to a reactive one.
Bill 2877 has passed in the House of Representatives, and will now go to the Senate for consideration when session resumes. The need for adequate mental health services in schools has become as relevant as ever, as we see more and more youth affected by mental health issues. Action needs to be taken to provide students with specialized care that is accessible and of optimal quality. The use of behavioral intervention teams in schools would allow for this and promote positive mental health outcomes for students. Advocating for the passing of this bill would be a critical stepping stone for making schools a safer place for students as well as for safeguarding their mental well-being.
