Patients (especially long term patients) need rest to help their bodies recover from illness.  There are many articles with medical research that discuss the negative effects on health from sleep deprivation. I personally witnessed both my husband (who was a short term patient) and my Mom (who was a long term patient) delay their recovery or cause further health damage due to sleep deprivation in hospitals. Nurses and other medical professionals enter the room every hour (and sometimes more often) waking the patient every time proclaiming it’s standard  procedure regardless if the patient is in need of rest. I truly Believe my Mom’s circumstances were made much worse by her inability to get rest during her entire 30 day continuous stay in the hospital.  She eventually was not able to recover and passed away. When I questioned the Nurses about my concerns over her lack of sleep for that long, they proclaimed they are required to wake the patient to announce they are in the room, or get permission to administer medications, or to provide general medical care. Hospitals do not make it a priority to ensure or report a patients rest or sleep. Most workers seemed sympathetic but until procedures are in place to make this a priority it will not change! From my observation, most of these things can be done quietly through IV’s, remote monitoring or other means without constantly waking the patient. At a minimum, patients should be given the option to sign a waiver allowing them to not be woken up or have their much needed rest interrupted for a specific period of time.
