Why this petition matters

Started by Emma Jay

The only treatment plans for people with eating disorders is sending them away by themselves to rehab and stripping them of their social life, daily routine, and access to true self reliability without the enforcement of a system. I believe that to better serve people with this issue is to first raise awareness and teach the public about how to avoid letting yourself fall into the unhealthy patterns of the eating disorder because awareness would help reduce numbers of people suffering, while also giving people an insight to a much bigger and common problem than is noticeable. Eating disorders are sneaky and are thrown under the rug for people to deal with because society shames people who struggle. I also believe that there should be a tear down of diet culture. Instead of encouraging people to lose weight and track everything they eat, I think that diet plans should be centered around healthy living and not associated with numbers or exercise. Healthy living focused on giving a person's body its necessary fuel is what is important for sustainable and the most satisfying living. If people were more aware and desired a healthy living style of eating what you want when you want in accordance to their hunger, then people would naturally be more happy. Studies show that when you are well fed, hydrated, and rested your mood and overall happiness is increased. I have struggled with an eating disorder and body dysmorphia basically my whole life and it was not until I let my body tell me how to treat myself right did I see positive results in how I felt physically and mentally. I was at my lowest point when I had to go to a facility where they made me track how I ate and told me how to treat my body. So why do we not encourage a better and achievable natural lifestyle in schools and social media instead of the constant ads for losing weight? My goal is to reduce the increased numbers of people being diagnosed with eating disorders because people will already know they can trust their bodies and how to fuel it right.
