The U.S. Department of Education Youth Advisory Council would advise the Department on proposed K-12 and collegaite policies regarding a wide range of issues and would provide the Department a structure for obtaining feedback from those who are most directly impacted by education policy decisions.

The purpose and mission of the Council is to provide the Department a structure for consistent and ongoing youth engagement that would allow youth the opportunity to better their schools and communities by having a voice in the decision-making process. The Council would also provide students an opportunity to develop leadership skills.

Council members would engage in discussions with Department staff on K-12 and collegaite education policy issues.
In addition to providing recommendations regarding the Department’s proposed policies, Council members would also share recommendations for new federal education policies. and initiatives for the Department’s consideration.

The Council would be a representative body of youth leaders from each state.
Each State Education Agency (SEA) would select 1 youth leader to serve on the Council for 2-year terms.
