The Boundary Waters of the Superior National Forests in Minnesota is one of the most pristine waters in the country where no motor boats are allowed, there are no access points by car or plane, and is the habitat of thousands of animals. Under the Trump Administration, the land next to the boundary waters has been opened to mining. The untapped resource is copper and the Twin Metals Mining Company has asked to start mining there. The problem with mining copper is that 99% of rock mined is waste which contains harmful chemicals such as arsenic and need places to put them. They declared that they will put the dangerous compounds in little pools where they will be separated from the boundary waters. However, similar practices were done by mining companies in Alaska, and according to scientists in those areas, the nearby lakes and rivers reported high levels of arsenic and lead. If Twin Mining company gets its way, it is highly probable that the pristine rivers and lakes which rune right by the proposed mining sites, will be contaminated as a result of the mining. It is not worth the short term gains for the long term pains of the planet. As environmental activist and former miner Bob Tammen said, "you don't build long term on a mining industry." These beautiful pieces of land should be protected.
