This petition is to ask the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to allocate a portion of farm subsidies to farmers who use CRISPR technology. If more farmers grew crops using CRISPR technology, more people would see the benefits, and it would start to gain widespread adoption.

Most people know the tense debate around GMOs. GMOs were created with innovations in science and good intentions but their significant negative impact has resulted in a public outcry to ban them. However, they are now so widespread that removing them without another solution would have detrimental effects -- to the global economy, the environment, and world hunger.

New innovations in science and technology, such as CRISPR, are our very best hope of solving the crisis around GMOs. CRISPR is an entirely new method of genetic engineering that is much less risky and much more likely to avoid cross-contamination than the current method of creating GMOs. CRISPR technology has been tested to enable the following: preventing cacao beans from getting diseases and bananas from getting fungi, creating decaffeinated coffee beans, and even modifying wheat to significantly lower gluten proteins that cause celiac disease. In addition, CRISPR technology has even been tested to remove Lyme disease from mice and malaria from mosquitos. However, despite the amazing positive contributions of CRISPR technology, public concern about GMOs has created a negative perception of any genetically-engineered technology, impeding CRISPR's widespread adoption.

By convincing the Department of Agriculture to allocate more subsidies to farmers who use CRISPR technology, it will create a positive chain of events: more food will be produced with CRIPSR technology; more people will eat that food and experience its benefits; the negative perception of CRISPR will change; and CRIPSR will become a real solution to the tense debate around GMOs.

It all starts with action from the USDA, so I hope you will sign this petition.
