Dylan Burton started this petition to United States Congress and

There’s no federal law on an employee’s right to view their personnel file. Several state do have statutes on this topic, but most limit access to government/public employee. For example, Tennessee Code 8-50-108 allows state employees access to their personnel files within reasonable time.

There should be a federal law allowing current/former employees access to their personnel file. If an organization/corporation can share your information for “marketing purposes”, then employees should have access to their information: backing up claimed work experience, preparing a wrongful termination case, fighting the declination bonuses/compensation, etc.

Every employee, public & private, should have the much need access to their own personally identifiable information and records. This is your information; your history of dedication and loyalty to a company. You have the right to know what your company has decided to keep on you (awards, promotions, discipline, academics, etc). We should make this issue known and fight for those employees’ rights!
