You're Never "Too Young"
Jun 15, 2015 — Tomorrow kicks off the colorectal cancer community’s Young Survivors Week and this is an update on how our “little petition” has started making waves and raising awareness. I want to first THANK YOU for supporting this very important issue. Because each and every one of you that has signed we have been able to gain attention from major organizations and media. Because of your caring and compassion I have been able to share my story again and again. I have also become an active participant in a new organization dedicated to finding answers and cures as to why this disease is affecting younger and younger people – The Never Too Young Coalition. We are off to a terrific start and I’m convinced with this academic and advocacy backing we are headed for victory!
The Never Too Young Coalition is comprised of 35 advocacy organizations, comprehensive cancer centers and major research institutions. I LOVE this concept because its mission is to take on young-onset colorectal cancer through action, education and research. By educating the primary care and young adult communities about the symptoms associated with colorectal cancer and funding research to determine the causes associated with a rise in young-onset disease, the Never Too Young Coalition is determined to bring national attention to this increasing public health issue.
You’ve already taken the first step to support us. As you are reading this I want you to ask yourself, “What can I do? How can I take part in this movement? How can I make a difference?” Here are some ways you can take a stand for all of us young fighters:
• You can support the Never Too Young Coalition by participating in Young Survivors Week. This event will take place the week of June 15. For a list of the week’s activities and how you can get involved in holding a Survivor event in your area, click http://ccalliance.org/nevertooyoung/coalition.html Funds raised through Young Survivors week will benefit the work the Never Too Young Coalition is doing to provide a voice to all of us who have long been ignored based on age alone.
• You can attend and/or support the Fabulous Event in Washington DC http://www.chris4life.org/events/1103/the-5th-annual-fabulous-event
This is the kick-off event for the newly formed coalition, so this gala will be a crucial fundraiser to support this cause. You can attend in person or choose to donate items for a silent auction. Every little bit helps.
• Make a donation to the Never Too Young Coalition by clicking https://secure2.convio.net/cca/site/Donation2;jsessionid=83695D9AC6A49C2DC1E3BEE7CA41065D.app262b?df_id=3080&3080.donation=form1 . Every dollar counts. If everyone who has signed my petition was to donate $5 that would total over $385,000! Funds raised will be used to support education and research efforts which will ultimately lead to decreased incidence and mortality rates in the young adult population.
The facts are colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S., and every year approximately 140,000 people are diagnosed. Of those, the current stats show that approximately 29% are under the age of 50. On April 1st, 2013, I heard the words no person wants to hear – YOU HAVE CANCER. I was 36 years young and diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer. I have learned through my network of friends that you are never too young for colon cancer. Our numbers are rising daily and this coalition is our chance to stop this disease in its tracks. We must take a stand now and fight for our rights and our lives. Let’s take colorectal cancer out of the cancer equation NOW and save people TODAY. Colon cancer doesn’t check IDs! There are currently more than ONE MILLION young colon cancer survivors, and as one of them, I thank you for signing on to support my mission! Let’s start saving lives today!
