Black culture has made America immediately richer. From music to fashion to religion to parades and marching bands, our nation wouldn't be nearly as bright and fun without the black DNA that rolls through ever single state. Juneteenth is rightly a celebration of the true emancipation of black slaves, but it is also a great time to celebrate all the people who rose from slavery or immigrated here bringing all sorts of goodness, sights, sounds, words, goods and foods to all of us!

Making it a full federal holiday is, I believe, one small act of reparations that all of us can make to our African American brothers and sisters. I think that by making a truly unique day like Juneteenth a holiday celebration of all the black humans past, present, and future who pursue the American ideals of Freedom, Friendship, and Caring we can elevate the day to so much more than a somber morning of wreath laying for those blacks who paid the ultimate price for our past racism.

I hope that by 2024 we can have Juneteenth begin with church temple mosque services and the laying of wreaths by our leaders, only to morph into a plethora of block parties and parades, potluck dinners and soul food canteen trucks under a ferris wheel, and an evening of televised entertainment featuring jazz concerts interspersed with slam poetry and historical cosplay sketches moderated by a Chris Rock or Trevor Noah that becomes a beloved annual American tradition just as popular as St Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving or Memorial Day!

It is time, way past time, for Juneteenth to be added to the federal holiday list, with a triple mission to remember the history and the dead, to come together as one multicolor happy nation to celebrate Black Lives, Culture, and Achievement, and to imbibe our souls, ears, eyes, and hearts with black music, black stories, black actors, black humor, and black culture.

There is no better time than now!

Black people weren't free in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was adopted. They weren't free until 1865. So really, Juneteenth is the true Independence Day.
