In cities across America, young people are playing a game that undermines the very idea of a civilized society. It's called the knockout game and the rules are simple: Choose a person at random, approach them casually and, with nothing but your fist, try to knock them unconscious with a single blow to the head.
This game has claimed lives in at least three US Cities. A CBS report that questioned one teen about the motive for the disturbing behavior asks, "What's the point?" To which the teen answered, "For the fun of it. They just wanna see if you got enough strength to knock somebody out."
Reports of victims of the knockout game have come from Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, Missouri and Washington DC.
The intent to deliver a knockout blow to an unsuspecting victim's head is malicious and acting on the intent should have severe consequences. But what should the penalty be?
- A minimum of 10 years in a federal penitentiary for anyone convicted of an attempted knockout?
- 20 years for a successful one?
- Life in prison without the possibility of parole for a knockout game that ends in a fatality?
This game needs a legislative blow to the head. And this petition seeks to do just that.
Point out to Congress that barbaric game violates our right to public safety and we want to combat it by showing no judicial mercy for those want to throw knockout punches at random strangers "for the fun of it."
