Young Adults of Vermont started this petition to United States Congress

For too long, young adults in the United States have rolled over to government laws and regualtions that strip away our basic fundamental rights. Our population, aged 18-21, has become complacent to federal and state laws passed by an age group that has become far out of touch with our youth community. While we struggle with the burden of student loans, the steadily increasing price of living, etc., our government continues to treat our age group as children incapable of making decisions for ourselves. Yet, they continually call on us to fight for our country, fix the problems in our society, and function within their definition of normalcy.

Considering this, it is wholly unfair that a Congress isolated from our needs and wants is able to create and pass laws that impact our age group to such a degree, while the community that it so greatly effects is so far removed.

Lowering the tobacco laws to 18 is not about granting young adults permission to run amuck and do whatever they so please. It is an urge to our population to stand up and refuse to let our rights be taken away without our input. It is a call to action to allow the core group of our society to shape and influence our laws in a way that allows us the freedom we deserve. Young adults are adults, and if we are to be treated like adults in our society, we must rise together to ensure that our independence cannot be taken away.

By signing this pledge, you stand with youth rights and freedoms. I urge you to contact your respective legislatures and support our fight to establish young adults as an independent and outspoken group in America.

On behalf of young adults across the United States, we thank you immensely for your support.
