The Supreme Court has struck down Section 4, thus inhibiting Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which allows states to pass discriminatory voting laws without federal oversight. States have previously proposed legislation designed to make it harder to vote at every step of the process. These laws have restricted the forms of ID allowed in order to vote, reduced early voting, placed restrictions on voter registration, reduced polling sites, redistricted voting districts for partisan gain, and denied voting rights to Americans with criminal records who have paid their debt to society. These measures have disproportionately impacted African Americans, Latinos, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and young voters.
