Edward Sargent started this petition to The United States Congress

To the American People:

According to tradition, when the U.S. Congress is in session, each day officially begins with a Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The purpose of this petition is to call upon Congress to start a new tradition:

It calls upon Congress to pass a resolution that mandates that Congressional Representatives dedicate the moment right after the Pledge of Allegiance to read words of conscience from their hearts or from their constituents--or read the words of their former "Conscience of the Congress" the Honorable John Lewis, who passed away on July 17, 2021.

John Lewis is gone, but Congress must ensure that his words of conscience live on.

This petition proposes that the few minutes after the Pledge of Allegiance be dedicated in honor of John Lewis and be officially called:

"THE JOHN LEWIS MOMENT OF CONSCIENCE"

(Note: To provide a critique or constructive feedback about this petition, call: (213) 943-3844 and leave your comment. Thank you.)

During the John Lewis Moment of Conscience, one or two members of Congress will voluntarily step onto the House Floor to read some of the remarks that John Lewis made when he was amongst them. The moment, which should not last more than about five minutes, will remind the elected leaders to be led by their conscience. And that would be a good thing for America.

By signing this petition you will be supporting this straightforward proposal.
