United States Congress: Establish a Science Laureate

Since 1937, the United States Poet Laureate has, according to Wikipedia, aimed to 'raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry.'  The purpose of this petition is to have the US Congress establish an identical position but for the promotion and communication of science. Citizens of The United States, and the world at large, will continue to experience a more technologically complex world with more complicated challenges as we grow as a nation and a species. We need a recognized voice to share and promote scientific thinking and understanding of our world.

Citizens can only make better decisions if armed with not only a more informed world view, but with a more critical and scientific mindset. Advancing scientific discourse and understanding with the public will not only lead to a more technically trained work force, but a better equipped electorate that can work with, work around, or become the leaders of tomorrow as we seek to solve to problems of the day.

Promotting the petition:

I've set up a twitter and tumblr account to help spread awareness of the petition.  Feel free to use the images on tumblr (or make your own) and ask the question, "Why not a Science Laureate?"
