There Are No Human Rights Without Women's Rights
Why this petition matters
Women's human rights as human rights are not new, and their demands have been getting stronger from time to time. Victims of violations of women's human rights began to demand rights and seek guarantees for their rights in order to obtain these rights. Women's human rights, namely rights owned by a woman, either because she is a human being or as a woman. Based on the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which was signed in 1979 at a conference organized by the UN Commission on the Status of Women. These are 5 basic rights of women that must be known.
Firstly, employment rights which is every woman has the right to have the same work opportunities as men. This right includes equal opportunities from the selection process, work facilities, benefits, and up to the right to receive equal wages. In addition, women are entitled to paid leave, including maternity leave. Women cannot be dismissed by the employer on the grounds of pregnancy or marital status.
Then, rights in the health sector which is women have the right to get the opportunity to be free from death during childbirth, and this right must be pursued by the state. The state is also obliged to ensure that health services are obtained, particularly family planning services, pregnancy, childbirth and post-delivery.
After that, rights in education. As one of RA Kartini's points of struggle, every woman has the right to get the opportunity to attend education, from elementary to university level. There must be an elimination of stereotypical thinking about the roles of men and women in all levels and forms of education, including equal opportunities to get scholarships.
Besides that, rights in marriage and family which is women must remember that they have the same rights as men in marriage. Women have the right to choose their husbands freely, and there should be no forced marriages. Marriage that is carried out must be based on the agreement of both parties. In the family, women also have the same rights and responsibilities, both as parents to their children, and as husband and wife.
Last but not least, rights in public and political life. In public and political life, every woman has the right to vote and be elected. After being elected successfully through a democratic process, women must also have the same opportunity to participate in the formulation of government policies until their implementation.
