Since at least 2014, Uyghur Muslims have been living under an extreme police state in the People's Republic of China. Any expression of religion, including something as simple as having a beard or refusing to drink alcohol, has been criminalized. The PRC has gone so far as to surveil the homes of citizens.

Awfully enough, hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs have been held in "re-education camps", think concentration camps, and have had religious and political beliefs forced upon them. Most detainees are abused both physically and mentally. Children have been taken from their families and placed in highly militarized schools. Uyghurs have been drugged, sterilized, electrocuted, raped, tortured, and forced to undergo unwanted abortions. The PRC denied the existence of these camps until they finally legalized.

Many other Asian, Middle Eastern, and African countries have voiced their disapproval of the arbitrary detainment, but signing a letter is not enough. It's time for someone to do something about it. The United Nations ought to force the PRC to address these human rights violations and the immoral treatment of its citizens. As a Muslim in the US, one of my greatest fears is for my faith to be criminalized. Certain aspects of my faith are already deemed illegal in other countries. Please sign this petition if you believe that the PRC ought to allow Uyghur Muslims to practice their religion without persecution, detainment, and abuse.
