Stop torture and death penalty in Brunei - URGENT : new Penal Code on April 3rd

In Brunei, a State of the Borneo island located in South East Asia, the sultan Hassanal Bolkiah intends to implement a new Penal Code based on the Sharia law. It would legalise stoning to death people accused of homosexuality or adultery. It would also allow amputation of a limb in case of a theft.

These measures are expected to come into force on April 3rd 2019 and would apply to all muslims who represent two-thirds of the state’s population.

Such penalties are likened to torture and are therefore a violation of human rights. Besides, though Brunei has signed the Convention Against Torture in 2014, it has still not ratified it. Above all, no one should ever be judged nor punished for his/her sexual orientation as long as the relationship is consensual and respects the integrity of each partner. This situation is purely unacceptable.

This is why I am asking the international community to halt Hassanal Bolkiah legalizing these measures in order to preserve human rights in Brunei.
