It was 3 days into the new year (2018) when 53 deaths were recorded, while 40,000 persons were displaced in Benue State (one of the 36 states in Nigeria) by Fulani Herdsmen.
Again, 10 days into the new year, 25 persons were slaughtered and another case of displacement is yet to get to the books in Taraba State of Nigeria; courtesy of Fulani Herdsmen.
Recently, the spokesperson to the Nigerian President, Mr. Femi Adesina stated that 756 deaths were recorded between 2013 to 2015. These deaths were furiously coordinated and executed by Fulani Herdsmen on defenseless citizens, most of whom were Christians residing in rural areas with poor or limited asses to security and basic social welfare.
The Fulani Herdsmen are nomads who parade the streets of Nigeria with their cattle, so many to be numbered. While on parade, they visit farmland owned by local agriculturists and feed their cattle on the farmland, killing and destroying the source of business and livelihood of rural dwellers.
Any attempt by rural dwellers to protest such destructive venture by the herdsmen is greeted with carnage and manslaughter occasionally resulting to deaths and displacement. Houses are burnt down, women and children murdered and the strong racing to safety, away from their home.
There is fear of attack in the rural areas. Life is most unsafe especially in areas where Fulani Herdsmen usually pass through to feed their cattle.
Fulani Herdsmen move around with AK 47 riffles well loaded and ready to unleash mayhem at the slightest provocation.
The fact being that the victims are usually Christians residing in communities has given the situation a religious twist.
The Fulani Herdsmen are Muslims from the Fulani tribe. Their attacks have previously been recorded in non-Fulani and non-muslim communities.
The Federal Government of Nigeria is yet to take a serious action to bring to book the perpetrators of this action.
The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a Fulani and a Muslim.
He recently ordered the national boss of the Nigerian Police Force to relocate to Benue State (one of the troubled towns) to calm down protests resulting from the massive killings.
Since the killings began, there is yet to be legal conviction and sanction.
Various state governments in Nigeria have resorted to self-help by enactment of anti-open grazing law which would prohibit open grazing and hinder assess of Fulani Herdsmen into rural communities.
Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) is the umbrella body of all cattle breeders in Nigeria which of course includes Fulani Herdsmen.
In a recent interview with BBC the head of MACBAN, Garus Gololo has defended the new year killings which took place at Benue State. He said the Fulani Herdsmen were simply defending their cattle from attacks, thereby killing as much as 53 people who had no weapons to defend themselves.
In view of the arrogance of Fulani Herdsmen; in view of the killings, bloodshed and carnage; in view of the deliberate genocidal attacks on Christian communities by Fulani Muslims; in view of the high level of insecurity and vulnerability of Christians in Nigeria, there is need for an international intervention.
