On August 5, 2019, against the will of the Kashmiri people, the Indian government made a decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Indian Constitution and bifurcate the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories to fully erode Kashmir's political, economic, and judicial autonomy.

Several members of the Indian parliament, Pakistan-a party to the dispute and also Kashmiris around the world have denounced this measure as unconstitutional, illegal, and in violation of previous United Nations Security Council resolutions.

To prepare for this draconian measure, an additional  reported 35,000 Indian security forces have been sent to occupy Kashmir (already  reported to be occupied by over 500,000 Indian forces) and restrict the movement of people and goods. Tourists were forced to leave against their will. Internet, mobile, and landline communications remain banned in Kashmir by the "world's largest democracy" to suppress the voices and actions of the people. Access to life saving medical care remains in peril. Two nuclear powers remains on edge with the threat of death and destruction upon millions of innocent civilians on both sides. Kashmir remains at risk of another flash point of ethnic cleansing and mass deaths.

We urge you to use your power of humanity and sanity to prevent further death and destruction and allow Kashmiris to be able to decide their own future as has been promised to them time to time in international forums.
