After the crimes of the Holocaust became internationally known, the world vowed it would never happen again. On December 9, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. But history since 1945 has shown that the international community has stood by, again and again, as genocide unfolds. From Bangladesh to Darfur, and now Syria, humanity is still struggling to end what Winston Churchill once called a "crime without a name."
There is an additional Convention that deals with the production, storage, and use of chemical weapons. In 2014 the U.S. and Russia supervised the supposed destruction of Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons, but on April 4, 2017 the world has once again seen the pictures of the victims of a chemical attack by the Syrian government on its own people. Is the world going to continue to sit, view these atrocities, and now hold anyone accountable?
This is not an issue for the U.S. and Russia! This is an issue that needs to be addressed by every human being and by every government that has any kind of a national "conscience." We cannot continue to idly sit by and allow these acts to continue. Have we become desensitized to the plight of our fellow human beings? I would hope not!
It is time for the entire world community to STAND UP and call for all governments to take a position in which they will not only condemn such actions, but where they will take ACTION to stop such atrocities.
