Israeli police attacked Muslim worshippers late on Friday inside the Al-Aqsa Masjid in occupied East Jerusalem's Old City.

Dozens of Palestinians were injured in the night-time clashes at Islam's third-holiest site.

Tensions escalated after tens of thousands of Palestinian worshippers stayed in the masjid on the final Friday of Ramadan to protest in support of Palestinians facing eviction from their homes on Israeli-occupied land claimed by Israeli illegal settlers. Palestinian protesters have clashed with Israeli police in the city on a nightly basis since the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
