Sophie Staples started this petition to United Nations

Astronomy, the branch of science which is focused on space, is incredibly beneficial to our society. Through viewing space, we can predict potentially harmful asteroid strikes; make important discoveries about the universe; protect our power grid from dangerous solar flares by monitoring sun activity; and more. The awe-inspiring views of the Milky Way are also very valuable to many people as a means of connection to the universe. Megaconstellations threaten everyone’s access to the night sky. Megaconstellations are groups of at least thousands—& often tens-of-thousands—of satellites. Many corporations plan to create megaconstellations in future years—with the satellites planned being, on average, brighter than 99% of satellites in the night sky today. According to experts, these satellites could have a severe negative impact on the science of astronomy by making it practically impossible to photograph & observe the Milky Way without an unreasonable amount of interference. They could also prevent even the public from enjoying the Milky Way by completely obscuring the stars from naked-eye viewers. Sign this petition to tell the United Nations to negotiate a treaty to regulate the brightness of megaconstellation satellites & protect the night sky as a resource for us all.
