The state of Transnistria, or the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, has continued to be unrecognised for more than twenty five years, being founded on September 12th, 1990, soon before the Soviet Union broke apart on December 25, 1991. The United Nations refuses to recognise it as a country, claiming that it is a part of Moldova. The only countries that recognise Transnistria as a country are Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (or Artsakh), all of which are also post-Soviet states with almost no recognition. This issue must be resolved immediately, as it has caused border and territorial disputes between Moldova and the republic of Transnistria for almost three decades. A study conducted by the University of Colorado Boulder in 2010 showed that more than 80% of ethnic Russians and Ukrainians, and 60% of ethnic Moldovans preferred complete independence and autonomy rather than reunification with Moldova. If it were recognised as an official country, the border disputes would be solved and the people of Transnistria would be content.
