Adopt a UN Sustainable Development Goal for the Ocean

All life on earth depends on the health and vibrancy of the ocean. We, the Millennial generation, play a crucial role in changing the tide and determining the state of our planet for ourselves and for generations to come.

In order to address the significance of ocean sustainability and make marine health a priority, we urge that the United Nations vote to include a stand-alone Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to position the ocean as a key element of the post 2015-development agenda. The vote will take place in New York this September 2015, where the UN will adopt six Sustainable Development Goals as the post-2015 targets for international development.

An SDG focused on ocean sustainability will promote sustainable fishing methods, encourage the establishment of marine protected areas, reduce marine biodiversity loss, recognize the value of oceans in eradicating poverty and providing food security to dependent populations.

By asking for the inclusion of ocean sustainability in the SDG, we will set a precedent in prioritizing the health of our oceans and changing the tide for the future of ocean sustainability.

This is a unique opportunity for you to have a voice in an international decision of such magnitude. This petition will be presented to both UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon and to UN General Assembly President, Sam Kahamba Kutesa.
