No living Kashmiri will ever forget this horrific and shameful act committed by the Indian army men on the night of February 23, 1991 in the twin villages of Kunan Poshpora (Kupwara), Indian Occupied Kashmir. The army men of the Fourth Raj Rifles under a false search operation, beat-up the men of the entire village to pulp and raped at least 100 women of all ages (youngest victim being 14 and the oldest; 80). International Human Rights Watch says the number of victims could be up-to 300. A lot of the victims had to remove their injured insides and 4 were reported dead. Most of them are still paying a lot of money every month on medications. There was no sort of compensation for them. But compensation comes later, they weren’t given any justice at all. It’s been nearly 3 decades since but no investigation has been held against the accused army men. The Indian media and government continues to  dismiss the incident as baseless. But the witnesses and first handed victims still live to recount the horrors of that night. The impunity that the Indian soldiers have been enjoying under AFSPA is the biggest issue that prevails. Be it Kunan Poshpora or the rape and murder of the 14 y/o Tabinda Gani or the gang rape of Asifa and Neelofar who were later murdered by the rapist soldiers, Indian army men have been defiling the underprivileged women in Indian Occupied Kashmir for long and have always been able to get away with it due to the prevailing draconian laws. Let’s make it a duty upon ourselves to get justice for these rape victims who have long been forgotten! Let’s make this world a better place for them!
