What do you think of when you hear the word pollution? Probably trash, oil, or plastic. But what about...sound? There is a deafening form of pollution called noise pollution, and it’s affecting our oceans in a deadly way.

Most people think of the ocean as majestic, peaceful, serene. But underneath the ocean’s surface, it’s far from that. Light doesn’t travel very far under the sea, and sounds are vital to marine mammal survival.

Ocean noise pollution is driving animals out of their habitats and reducing their ability to communicate, navigate, locate prey, avoid predators and find mates. This has major consequences for marine mammals, like mass strandings and even death.

Human activities like commercial shipping, seismic surveys, oil exploration and military sonar are to blame.

There is currently no international regulation on ocean noise. The biggest challenge that organizations face when trying to do something about this problem, is that the general public is simply not aware this type of pollution exists. Were you?

Public awareness matters. It leads to social pressure. That pressure then leads to change. We want to amplify our voices and spread awareness.

Help us create an ‘Ocean Noise Pollution’ day. International ‘Days’ educate the general public on issues of concern on a large scale and motivate change.

An ‘International Ocean Noise Pollution Awareness Day' will make the general public and institutions pay attention. It will educate people about this unseen problem, what’s (not) being done to fix it and ultimately put pressure on the companies and governments that have the power and influence (aka $$) to make a real difference.

Knowledge has power. Power to make people see, feel and act.
So sign the petition and help us get loud for those who can’t.
