In April 2021, NATO began withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan. A month later, the Taliban began a series of assaults on the country, and in August 2021 invaded Panjshir, a province in eastern Afghanistan that is now the only region not occupied by the Taliban. The Taliban have blockaded Panjshir and captured several of its provinces, amidst claims that the Taliban have been joined by other terrorist groups including Al-Qaeda. As a result of the blockade currently in place, over 200,000 civilians are currently without supply of food, electricity, landline or mobile phone telecommunciations, and no way to escape the country.

The Taliban currently face no resistance from international powers, nor have international powers indicated any intention to defend or rescue the starving in Panjshir.

The Taliban have attempted to appear to demonstrate peaceful leadership, but in many cases this could not be further from the truth, evident by news of their murder of 22 surrendering Afghan soldiers, torture and massacre of 9 ethnic minorities, murder of radio station owner Toofan Omar, beating and execution of an Afghan comedian Nazar Mohammad, killing of folk singer Fawad Andrabi, kidnapping of journalist Nematullah Hemat who remains missing, killing of a female civilian for not wearing a burqa, fatal beating of a mother for failing to provide food for their fighters, execution of a 21 year old woman for wearing tight clothes while walking alone, and door-to-door capturing, gang rape and forced marriage of unmarried and widowed females as young as 12 as 'qhanimat' or spoils of war, just amongst the reported atrocities in the past several months with many undocumented. This behaviour of the Taliban is not dissimilar to atrocities committed such as the shooting, stabbing and eye gouging of a policewoman who was left permanently blind, within the year prior to the Taliban takeover.

Evidently, news reports and footage portray the actual level of the Taliban's respect for Afghan people as their conquerors entitled to rape and pillage, rather than as the peaceful governors they are attempting to portray themselves as.

We cannot simply look away while this level of preventable injustice continues, or the fate that awaits those in Panjshir without international assistance. 

Please sign this petition to call upon the United Nations (UN) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to intervene with food, aid, and protection before it is too late. Please also share this with others in any way possible.
