The people of Kashmir are in desperate need of our help! Their state has been under a curfew and communications blackout since August 5, due to decisions made by the current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Consequently, citizens can’t freely leave their houses to get essential supplies, or communicate with the outside world. Thus, Kashmiris are facing shortages in food and much needed medical supplies. When granted permission to leave their house, they are subject to much violence in the form of beatings, tear gas, cluster bombs, and the firing of pellet guns.

The state of Kashmir has been the subject of dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947, making it one of the most militarised regions in the world. Modi, revoked Articles 370 and 35A on August 5, leading to the eradication of the special status that was granted to Kashmir following the Indo-Pakistani war. Revocation of these articles means that Kashmir will no longer have a separate constitution or possess their own autonomy; instead they will be under the Indian government’s complete control. It has been described as the “darkest day in Indian democracy” by Mehbooba Mufti, a former chief minister of the region. “They want to change the demography of the only Muslim majority state in India and disempower Muslims to the extent where they become second class citizens in their own state".

We are in a position where we can raise awareness of the atrocities that are taking place. Let’s help Kashmir reclaim their basic human rights, prevent a potential genocide, and give them the right to choose whether they want their state to be independent.
