Your Excellencies:

On New year's eve, Omoyele Sowore a frontline human rights activist in Nigeria and the publisher of Sahara reporters was arrested again alongside four others  at the Crossover with candle light protest which was organised to mourn and stand in solidarity with all fallen heroes who lost their lives as a result of the excessive use of force by the Nigerian Armed forces and the Nigerian Police, those that were brutally murdered during the famous #EndSars Protest across the country. The 'October 20 2020 Lekki tollgate Lagos massacre' as a case study your excellencies. The Crossover night protest was tagged, #CrossoverWithCandlelightProtest organised across Nigeria on 31st December, 2020 which was the same time most churches and night clubs were open for their different crossover night engagements.

Sowore and other activists had mobilised Nigerians for a peaceful Crossover with Protest procession to be held across the country on New Year's eve. Few minutes into the new year in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, the Nigerian Police were seen harassing the protesters and when Sowore asked what the problem was, they pounced on him and other activists at the event and brutalised them breaking Sowore's nose and injuring others in the process. They arrested Sowore and four other activists thereafter. This is definitely not the first time the Nigerian Police have been caught dehumanising peaceful protesters with such excessive use of force.

I now call on the United Nations, UK parliament, European Union and all others that these petition has been addressed, to join me in demanding for the unconditional release of these Activists and to implement sanctions for anyone guilty of human rights violations. Let me also bring to your notice your Excellencies that they've been detained for more than 48 hours without any charge. I also gathered that these Police Officers named CSP HYELHIRA ALTINE DANIEL and DCP PAM gave the arrest and torture order of Sowore and four others.

As the International Body responsible for observing and monitoring violations of human rights across the globe, we urge you to take immediate and effective actions to secure their release.
