FOR THE INTEGRATION OF THE NINE PLANET BOUNDARIES IN THE COSTA RICAN, BELGIAN, EUROPEAN AND INTERNATIONAL LEGAL FRAMEWORKS

I join the proposal of the University for International Cooperation of Costa Rica and Natural Pact, Belgian association of international law specialized in the holistic regeneration of ecosystems and biodiversity.

We, the citizens, consider that a civilization that encourages individuals to overexploit resources by confiscating them from future generations is obsolete. Currently, the loss of biodiversity is the biggest threat to our planet: we are already in the red zone, a zone where scientific models are no longer to define the consequences for the earth's balance.

Sustainable development, which favors the status quo and does not question this self-destructive lifestyle, does not provide viable solutions. It must, therefore, stop being used as a reference model by our political decision-makers, and must be replaced by a new model that takes into account the absolute limit of our planet's environmental resources.

This model of development aims to promote social justice, well-being of populations and their basic needs, such as access to food, decent housing, sanitation, energy, education, health care, while respecting the 9 planetary boundaries : biodiversity loss, chemical pollution, land conversion, climate change, freshwater withdrawals, ocean acidification, ozone layer depletion, nitrogen and phosphorus loading, air pollution.

For example, that intensive agriculture alone is responsible for 80% of these harmful changes to the environment, there is now a need to move rapidly towards an organic and regenerative model of agriculture at the global level.

We ask our representatives to draw inspiration from the regenerative development models already applied in other cities and countries of the world such as:

Therefore, we ask our representatives in the institutions of our country to set the example by including the respect of planet boundaries in their legal frameworks. We also ask them to relay this request to the United Nations so that the international legal frameworks are updated in line with the current environmental reality.

By signing this petition, I support the proposal made by the University for International Cooperation of Costa Rica and Natural Pact, and support their advocacy work with local, national and international institutions to integrate the respect of planet boundaries in their respective legal frameworks to promote new odels of regenerative development.
