Ethiopia has been constructing the Renaissance Dam, since 2011. It is currently implementing Stage 2 of filling the dam. The dam has a capacity of 79,000,000,000 cubic meters.

Why is this a problem?

Egypt relies on the Nile for 90% of its water. Egypt’s economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, dating back to Ancient Egypt, when the Egyptians first developed agriculture. Most economic activities take place in the highly fertile Nile Valley. The Nile river is at least 30 million years old and was first used for crop cultivation by the ancient Egyptians in 10,000 BC. Egypt is the most dependent country on the Nile out of the 11 countries it flows through!

Why is this injustice?

Egypt receives about 55 billion cubic meters of Nile water annually. Whereas, Ethiopia receives nearly ONE TRILLION CUBIC METERS OF RAIN ANNUALLY. Ethiopia exploits more than 800 BILLION CUBIC METERS have already been used on Ethiopia's lands for: Agriculture, natural pastures, forests, etc. Because of these huge quantities of Ethiopian water resources, the per capita share of water resources exceeds the global water poverty limit according to the definition of the United Nations (1000  cubic meters annually), while the per capita share in Egypt does not exceed 600 cubic meters!

What are the environmental impacts?

Geology experts have classified The Renaissance Dam, internationally, among the most dangerous projects! Dr. Hisham Bakhit, Professor of Hydraulics at the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University confirmed that the possibility of the collapse of any facility in the world depends on many factors, referring to the reports on the possibility of the collapse of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam when the filling is completed.  Dr. Bakhit said - during an open dialogue session organized by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, in cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in Egypt- that "the Renaissance Dam is internationally classified as one of the most dangerous projects and the possibility of its collapse is possible."  He attributed the reason for the collapse of the Renaissance Dam in case of filling to the fact that Ethiopia was asked to repeat the studies related to construction in order to preserve the dam, and so far Ethiopia has not proven that it has reconsidered this issue.  He added that there are also fundamental changes that occurred during operation with regard to the openings for electricity generation, and this is illogical and puts many question marks, in addition to the method of filling the dam and not benefiting from this filling, especially since so far this water has not been used in the process of generating electricity.  Finally, the geological reality of the region and the region's inability to bear any concrete constructions. Pointing out that in the event of the collapse of the Renaissance Dam, the situation would be catastrophic for Sudan!

Water is a matter of life or death. The dam will cost the lives of over 160 million people!
