All throughout history, different continents and countries have cascaded oppression among their citizens. From genocides, to famine, to mistreatment of lower social and economic classes, history is full of injustice that still occurs today. One instance of this modern-day oppression comes from Africa. Africa has had many issues with humane treatment of their citizens in the past, more specifically the children. Because Africa is highly unstable and lacks government oversight, warlords have resorted to employing children, as young as seven years old, to fight for them. Not only is this unfair, but it is cruel. One  of the most pressing issues in today’s society is  that children are being brutalized in Africa..

An integral factor while examining children’s rights in Africa is taking a deeper look into the injustices that have occurred, or the child soldiers. The first reason why this is a major problem is the explicit fact that these children are under aged and shouldn’t have to be doing things like fighting for rebel armies.. Young girls who are recruited are raped and forced into marriage. They’re treated like sexual objects in order to satisfy much older men. The article “Child soldiers in Africa” states that “The recruited children are mainly from poor families, they have no access to education, and they’re separated from their Families.¨  For context, some basic necessities for humans to survive aren’t limited to happiness and ability to socialize. If people aren’t given those opportunities (especially children), it can cause many mental health issues that will last a lifetime.Ultimately, there is a severe lack of rehabilitation programs, meaning that kids don’t have a clear passageway on how to continue or excel in their education once they get back from recruitment Children without the possibility for a better future are far more likely to remain soldiers far into adulthood, raises security concerns for countries like the United States. For all of these reasons, child recruitment in Africa is a major issue that needs to be solved immediately..

American citizens can take part in helping the children of Africa find safety and happiness by demanding the deployment  of. UN peacekeepers. The UN peacekeepers  are necessary in targeted areas in the DRC, Central African Republic and Uganda to protect children from recruitment into child soldier units. The article ¨ Despite remarkable progress¨ states, ¨In the last 28 years, the mortality rate of children under 5 dropped by 59%. ¨ They also state that, ¨ With the support of peacekeeping missions, thousands of children have been released from armed forces and groups within the Central African Republic.”thus proving that UN peacekeeping missions are improving life for Africans.. The UN Peacekeepers Deploy Child Protection Advisers, mainstreaming child protection within the mission, and negotiate with armed groups in order to protect children. Child Protection Advisers are specialist staff sent to missions to help them fulfill the child protection mandate. Their work includes placing the concerns of children onto the peace and political agenda, ensuring that child protection becomes an integral part of the mission's engagement. So far, they have made so much progress with protecting children from becoming child soldiers. The approved budget for UN Peacekeeping operations for the fiscal year 1 July 2020 - 30 June 2021 is $6.58 billion. Now that may seem a lot, however by way of comparison, this is less than half of one percent of world military expenditures (estimated at $1.747 trillion in 2013). As can be demonstrated, the UN peacekeepers are much less expensive than any other military and they have saved thousands of innocent lives from being abducted or killed. Therefore if we increase the budget to 10 billion dollars, many more lives could be saved if we continue supporting the UN peacekeeper deployment. Consequently, we should continue to support the UN peacekeepers, if possible, because of all of the positive impacts that they’re making on the world. Sign this petition to support bringing much-needed funds to the UN peacekeepers to save child soldiers.
