Ban wet markets across the world

The current COVID-19 coronavirus worldwide pandemic causing devastation across the globe has been linked to animals being sold at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, a ‘wet market’ in Wuhan, China, where the disease jumped from animal to human. Although China is not the only country to have these ‘wet markets’, we MUST take action for a complete ban worldwide, not only for these poor animals and their indescribable suffering, but to prevent the spread of any more zoonotic diseases spreading from animals to humans, therefore claiming lives worldwide. This is so very apparent in the devastatingly huge number of lives lost across the world due to COVID-19.

COVID-19 is similar to that of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome), with all three of these diseases being spread from animals to humans. SARS, recognised in the early 2000s, was also linked to a wet market, and spread to over 8,000 people and killed almost 800.

At these ‘wet markets’, various animals such as rats, wolf cubs, dogs, cats, bats, snakes and also wildlife such as endangered pangolins, and koalas, are being kept and killed in extremely unsanitary conditions. These markets are a breeding ground for disease. It is claimed that animals’ immune systems are weakened due to stress, and due to the squalid conditions they live in. This creates an environment where different viruses from different species can mix and spread.

Live animals being sold alongside dead animals, alongside seafood, and many live animals are freshly slaughtered in front of customers so they can see the produce they are buying.

Animals both dead and alive are being kept in close proximity with one another, stacked on top of one another in cramped cages and extremely confined spaces, crammed side by side with busy shoppers, with secretions of bodily fluids such as blood, pus, urine and faeces soaking them. These animals could have their own viruses and diseases, and nonetheless these animals are still being cooked and eaten.

How can we tolerate this barbaric animal cruelty and the risk of future global pandemics?

We NEED to make a stand for change.

Tragically, lives are being lost all over the world due to COVID-19, causing an endless amount of suffering and pain, especially to the loved ones left behind.

There is also the financial impact on families, businesses collapsing, small businesses, the self-employed, job loss, and the huge strain on the National Health Service in England, and health care workers across the globe who are risking their own lives and making sacrifices on the frontline battling COVID-19.

We also MUST take a stand for animal welfare, these animals NEED protecting. Often these vulnerable animals are trafficked wildlife, particularly pangolins. Innocent animals are being killed in such horrific, inhumane and frankly barbaric circumstances. Suffering, in pain and frightened, they have no voice.

Can we risk another pandemic in the future?

We CAN NOT have another pandemic like the coronavirus happening again.

This suffering can not continue.
