The humanitarian emergency in western China is relatively self-evident. Mentioned during the review of China's policies in Geneva merely months ago, the frequently reported ethno-religious discrimination occurrent in western China, Xinjiang must be given more prominence. As of currently, reports from credible sources indicate that China has detained a million or more ethnic Uighurs in the western region of Xinjiang and forced as many as two million to submit to re-education and indoctrination.

Such re-education allegedly entails force feeding these Muslims pork and forcing them to imbibe. This could be considered the least deplorable of acts reported. Other accounts around the region believe that these Muslims are:

“being treated as enemies of the state solely on the basis of their ethno-religious identity,”

Some report that abuse and torture are "common practices" in these re-education centers and that this maltreatment has even resulted in deaths.

Member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Gay McDougall makes the case that China had turned Xinjiang into “something resembling a massive internment camp, shrouded in secrecy, a sort of no-rights zone".

The reports on these crimes are endless...

“There’s no legal basis, none, for people to be held this way,” Sophie Richardson, China director for Human Rights Watch, observed. “There is no warrant, there is no crime, there is no calling a lawyer, there is no calling your family, there is no knowing when you are going to get out, there is no knowing what you have been charged with.”

The government denies the allegations, saying people willingly attend special “vocational schools” which combat “terrorism and religious extremism”.

In light of ultimately holding these criminals accountable for their crimes and liberating these innocent people (if the reports are indeed veritable), we must implore the UN and all capable parties of further investigating the matter or facilitating the UNs investigation.
