To improvise George Orwell in the context of this ongoing pandemic, "all are vulnerable, but some are more vulnerable than others". Nothing fits this saying more aptly than the plight of the migrant workers across India.

If we would turn the pages of history, it reflects the same story that the marginalised has been most vulnerable to a pandemic or epidemic as their economic means are non of luxuries, but those of hand-to-mouth survival. And, as history repeats itself, it got repeated in the COVID pandemic too.

When for most of us this period was about staying healthy and being fit, for them it was about survival. Apart from COVID, what added to their plight was the administrative inefficiency and no prior planning on the part of the governments of the states and union, before declaring Janta Curfew or, the nation-wide lockdown.

Had there been a proper and adequate mechanism to mitigate this predicament and a universal pan-India platform or database like the Aadhar or BPL where all the workers' welfare schemes and policies could be consolidated, the benefits could have been easily transferred to the needy and situation could have been a bit less scarry.

However, better late than never. The pandemic is not over yet. The plight still persists. If the government could initiate such a platform or digital registry, it certainly would be in the nation's interests and for the good of the migrants especially.

And of course, happiness can be found in the darkest of the times, only if one remembers to turn the lights on. Let's vocalize this dire need of such a platform and turn the lights on to obliviate the darkness of these gloomy times.
