Carly is ready for discharge from the hospital, but United Healthcare has determined that Carly can't go to acute rehab because she has "no medical needs" (she weighs 85 lbs, has a feeding tube, is oxygen dependent at night, still on antibiotics, is paralyzed, and has a catheter). They have now also denied transfer to a Long-term Acute Care without a given reason. Both of these discharge plans were recommended by Carly's medical team. On April 8, Carly went to the ER with numbness and tingling in her hands, feet, arms and legs. She was diagnosed shortly thereafter with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).
GBS is a very rare disorder, affecting about 1 in 100,000 people, in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms may increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all. GBS is an autoimmune disease.
Carly needs continuing care and coverage as a single mother with two young children for the recommended next level of care. Please show United Healthcare this is not acceptable as Carly is still presenting with numerous medical needs in order to continue to mend and restore her quality of life.
