Bay Whitaker started this petition to Unite The Union - Executive Council

We are signing this because we think members of a trade union should be able to vote for our new General Secretary without gerrymandering and interference from political factions outside the union.

On 3 May 2021 some Members of Parliament from the Labour Party went on BBC Newsnight and made allegations against one of the nominees to stand for UNITE General Secretary, Howard Beckett.  Howard replied fluently and it's unlikely that his supporters would be put off voting for him by such silly and vexatious accusations.

However, we are concerned that even while these allegations amount to no wrong doing, the candidate may be prevented from standing while processes of investigation are being undertaken.  This tactic has been deployed against political party members wishing to stand in local and mayoral elections in recent years, so we know this is a strategy that is part of the politicians' playbook  for suppressing democracy.  This is not about Howard Beckett, but about a broader principle: politicians or any bad faith agents should not be allowed to influence our democratic processes.

We ask the Executive Council to ensure that such vexatious complaints and accusations are not allowed to disrupt OUR union elections.

This petition will be shared not only with members of UNITE but with anybody interested in seeing fair democratic processes in our trades unions.
