  • About 800 million people go to bed hungry all over the world. Among those, 20,000 die each day from malnutrition. Damning stats. And still, 16,688 tons of food a day is thrown away by Malaysians, a quarter of which is edible.

During Holiday seasons, another 15 to 20 per cent hit the landfills. This also occurs in Ramadan, sadly, when moderation should be the order of the day
Another fact is that, Malaysia is coughing up RM40 billion to import food.

According to data from the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), households created the largest food waste last year at 38%, followed by wet markets (24%), restaurants (23%) and hotels (23%) (7 per cent) (7 per cent).

Siti Wahidah Abd Ghafar of Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute’s Centre of Promotion Technology, says in a Malaysian household — there were 7.5 million of them in 2016 — spent close to RM900 a month on food and that a quarter of that food is wasted during preparation, cooking and usage. This means about RM220 goes into the dustbin every month, or RM2,650 a year. Money is not the only concern.

How does the reduction of food waste help hunger in the world?
A new study by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations found that limiting food waste globally could reduce the need for more food by 60%. In other words, the need to produce more and more food could be dramatically offset by a reduction in the amount that is being wasted.

How can we help to do our part?

Households should only buy what is needed. This should be stored or refrigerated accordingly. Inappropriate storage is a big contributor to food wastage. Cook only what is needed. Eat everything on the plate. Finally, if there is waste, recycle or turn it into compost. Simple steps, but seldom followed.

We all waste food every day and by wasting food we waste precious energy, land and water. If we reduce food waste, fewer people in the world will go hungry, it will mean fewer habitats need to be cleared for crops, and climate change will slow down. We can all make a big difference by making small changes to our lifestyle.

Together let's Feed the hungry, by reducing the landfills.
