We need to oppose by all means Russia’s ruthless attack on Ukraine, where just like in all wars, civilians and young men drafted into military service suffer the most.
One efficient strategy for opposing Russian invasion of Ukraine would be for the European Union to open its borders to not only to civilians fleeing the war, but also to Russian deserters and young men eligible for military service and not guilty of war crimes.
Such a decision could significantly decrease the already low willingness of Russian soldiers to fight in the war. On top of making the Russian war operation more difficult, this would also offer humanitarian protection for Russian citizens opposing the war started by Russia’s government.
Utilizing the asylum system in this way would be genuine peace promotion. This strategy might be even more efficient than long-term economic sanctions.
We suggest that the Finnish government starts legislative preparations according to this initiative. Since giving temporary residence permits or asylum to Russian deserters would require uniform action and resolution from the European Union, we suggest that the Finnish government starts to promote this issue on the European Union level as well.
