Reverse the decision to terminate Mr. D - the crossing guard assigned to the corner of Washington Ave. & Whitewood Terr.

On Wednesday, February 4, the parents of Washington Elementary School were informed that the crossing guard who has been assigned to the intersection of Washington Ave. & Whitewood Terr. for the past several years was terminated effective immediately. It is our understanding that the cause of his termination was in response to his urgently requesting that DPW employees not proceed with ice and snow removal around the school property during school dismissal as this presented a safety risk to children and their parents as they tried to cross the street.
Ferman Dehart, Mr. D, has been a part of the Washington School family for several years. In addition to performing his duty to aid students and their parents in safely crossing a very busy intersection, he was extremely effective in relieving traffic congestion at this intersection especially during cold & inclement weather when most parents utilize the school drop off service. Mr. D is a kind and friendly person, always performing his work-related duties with genuine courtesy. We are proud that he is a part of the Washington School family and feel strongly that his termination is not only unfair to him personally, but will effect the safety of our school community during busy drop off and dismissal periods.
We are urging the decision makers at the Department of Transportation to reverse the decision to terminate Mr. D. We urge everyone who is a part of the Washington School community to please sign this petition to support Mr. D. Thank you!
