Mixed Forests of Uttrakhand play an important role in the conservation of biodiversity, water resources and glaciers besides absorbing millions of tons of carbon dioxide. At the same time these forests are the main source of daily needs like firewood, agriculture equipments, fodder etc of more than12 lakh families living in villages. Due to theses needs, villagers are forced to cut lakhs of trees annually as they do not have suitable alternatives. Due to this uncontrolled and unscientific cutting of mixed forests ;biodiversity and water resources are depleting at an alarming rate.Forests Department or the government have not been successful in providing suitable alternatives to farmers.
Every year millions of saplings are planted in various plantation schemes by various departments with the claims of success rate more than 75% but there are no plants at ground level.Barring plantation done by one or two agencies, plantation in most areas are not yielding results. The rise in forests cover as claimed by forests department is not the result of plantation but it is due to self expansion of monoculture Alpine which is the chief source of forests fire in Uttrakhand.
If suitable alternatives are not provided to villagers we will loose mixed forests in a decade or two which will cause heavy damage to the rare biodiversity and very important water resources situated in these mixed forests.
Therefore you are being requested to start necessary arrangements to provide suitable alternatives like subsidized cooking gas connections, metallic agricultural equipments to villagers so that their dependency on forests can be reduced.Plantation done in past years also need a review.
