CLEAN AIR IS MY BASIC RIGHT
The government of India through its environmental agencies and departments must ensure that the air citizens breathe is healthy and clean. Environmental standards have to be strictly enforced. Cities in north India including Agra and Delhi have reported alarming air quality continuously for over a month.
Government agencies have shown no sense of urgency to deal with the problem, even as research reports clear suggest the negative impact of poor air quality on health. The incidence of allergies and respiratory diseases continues to rise alarmingly, as government reports testify.
All polluting industries should be moved out of urban areas; burning of farm waste must be stopped; cities should fix an optimum number of vehicles; efficient urban public transport systems should be promoted to discourage private vehicles; all vehicles must be compulsorily checked every month for pollution emissions; sewage systems and landfill sites should be closely monitored and forced to follow standards laid down; municipal agencies must ensure waste is not burnt as is the practice these days; air purifiers must be installed at public places and busy street crossings; country-wise campaign for clean air has to be launched; government has to recognise right to clean air as a fundamental right
